Company History

Smithy Company was established in 1987 and through the years has established itself as the leader in premium benchtop machine tools.  Smithy delivers superior after sales service to experienced and novice machinists alike.  Smithy owners use their tools to make and repair parts in a wide variety of applications.  Smithy Company focuses on designing and building machine tools for small shop manufacturing applications and each Smithy machine delivered to a new owner is “Guaranteed to Pay its Own Way”.

The Early Days

The founders of Smithy Company combined an understanding of the unique needs of small shop manufacturers with strong engineering and design capabilities to develop precision benchtop machine tools.  At the time Smithy was started, the company principals were operating a John Deere farm machinery dealership.  That experience provided the foundation for the building of a strong organization that designs, manufactures and sells high quality machinery.

The first machines developed were small multi-purpose machines that fit small shop and garage settings.  Smithy machines are designed to last a lifetime and to provide quality and ease of use features for Smithy machine owners.  Over time the product line has expanded to include a wide variety of special designed benchtop machine tools for small shop manufacturers and part fabricators.

Smithy Company - An Engineering Shop

As a natural process of the company's original goal to design and build the best quality machine tools, Smithy Company has built a strong team of engineers that work to advance development in the design of small machine tools.  Smithy Company has the reputation for having good engineers and for designing the best benchtop machine tools. 

Current engineering projects include a program to design a special machine tool for the US military through an engineering subcontract with General Dynamics Corporation.  Smithy Company has engineers working at the company headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  As well as at the factory in China and at the company's support R&D lab in the Philippines.  Smithy Company is committed to continual improvement in machine tool design through the theme of “best engineering practices” applications specifically for small shop manufacturers.

SmithyCNC - The Future is Now

For many years Smithy owners encouraged us to develop small benchtop CNC machine tools.  We have been confident in our ability to design and build quality CNC machine tools for a long time.  Developing a high quality CNC control system for small shop settings that had the package of features and functionality that would work for our customers required a significant investment of engineering time and resources.  The end result is the EZ-Trol CNC control system.  We build our EZ-Trol CNC Control system in the US in order to meet our standards for best engineering practices and to assure a more interactive relationship with the CNC operator.
